Water Pollution Crisis in India: Save Our Rivers Now!

India faces a dire water pollution challenge in 2025, with 296 polluted river stretches identified nationwide—down from 351 in 2018 but still critical, driven by untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and agricultural runoff that contaminate groundwater affecting millions, especially in states like Rajasthan and Assam. Rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, and Musi suffer extreme pollution, with high BOD levels harming aquatic life and human health, while only 28% of urban sewage gets treated, releasing billions of liters of waste daily into waterways. This crisis spreads diseases and burdens ecosystems, underscoring the need for stronger treatment infrastructure and enforcement.

Key impacts and solutions:

Groundwater in 8 states contaminates over 2 million people with heavy metals and nitrates.

Most polluted stretches in UP, TN, and Gujarat require urgent sewage diversion and industrial regulation.

Promote STP/ETP installations, river clean-up drives, and community monitoring for sustainable water management
